About Quilting Adventures

Barbara Quinby and Alice Kolb

After attending classes and seminars in other parts of the country, Barbara Quinby and Sue Coates formed Quilting Adventures - Hill Country Style in order to host 5-day quilting seminars in their own "backyard". They knew from personal experience that the beautiful scenery, enchanting wildlife and moderate climate of the Texas Hill Country provide a perfect environment for artistic endeavors like quilting. Barbara and Sue offered two week-long spring seminars and one fall seminar weekend during each of the first two years of Quilting Adventures - Hill Country Style. The seminars were very well received which encouraged Barbara and Sue to continue offering the seminars. In the fall on 2007, Sue passed away suddenly. With the encouragement of many friends and former students and instructors, Barbara continued with plans and held the 2008 spring seminars.

With the help of her team and many supportive friends, the 2008 spring seminars were again very successful. Barbara was thrilled to announce during the spring seminars that Alice Kolb has now officially joined her in the business. Together they are planning for many more years of seminars. In fact, at the 2008 seminars they announced that the spring seminars will expand to 3 weeks in 2009 and they have already begun booking instructors for 2010. They invite you to come and enjoy the camaraderie and flavor of the Hill Country while learning new quilting skills from incredible instructors!

Quilting Adventures Newsletter
The team hopes to share their love of the Texas Hill Country with other quilters through their seminars and through this web site. There is much to tell, so they invite you to visit the Newsletter page periodically to catch up on the latest Hill Country and Quilting Adventures' seminar news. The newsletter will also keep you abreast of some of the team's latest personal adventures. So, by the time you arrive at one of the Quilting Adventures' seminars, you'll feel like they are old friends.

Meet Barbara Quinby
Barbara hails from Wisconsin and became a Texan 20 years ago when she transferred with IBM. She has been sewing since she was 12 years old, and most of her expertise was in garments as she made many of her business suits during her 23 year tenure as a project manager for IBM.

After retiring to the Texas Hill Country, Barbara and her husband set about building a home, breeding a few cows, and being certified as Master Naturalists. John is an avid photographer and the photos you see throughout the site are his. It was during this post-retirement time that Barbara was bitten by the quilting bug.

She enjoys all aspects of this new obsession, from design to piecing to hand and machine quilting; however, her favorite part of quilting is shopping for new fabric! She is involved in her local guild where she has served as Director of Membership and currently serves as 2nd Vice President - Workshops. Barbara brings her professional background, sewing expertise and her love of quilting to Quilting Adventures.

Meet Alice Kolb
From a long career in the national quilt world Alice joins Barbara, bringing similar strengths of quilt passion to the Quilting Adventures team. With a Home Economics Education- Clothing and Textiles background, Alice began her life-work in the college classroom, later transferring her skills to the sewing and quilt industry.

For many years she taught both nationally and internationally, designed and tested industry products and pursued her second passion, writing books and articles about needlework. She enjoys all aspects of sewing, both garment and quilt techniques, and maybe, like you, has a long list of “want-to-do next”.

Alice’s husband, George is retired with a new found interest in old German house restoration. Their time is divided between his enthusiasm toward on-going house restorations in the Fredericksburg area and quiet time spent in the New Mexico mountains. Alice’s other activities include family and grandson time, teaching a ladies’ Bible study group, enjoying her quilt bee and sharing her home with friends.

Remembering Sue Coates
Sue Coates was a vibrant woman, filled with enthusiasm for all things related to quilting. She shared her skills and friendship generously with those around her. If Sue had to miss a quilt class, retreat or bee, we all knew it must mean she was spending time with the family she adored -- four sons and ten grandchildren. Sue died tragically in an auto accident on October 4, 2007. Her laughter was delightful and we will remember it always. Visit our Remembering Sue page for more about her and her life.

Our Wonderful Team
The supporting members of Quilting Adventures are the wonderful team of Helen Ridgway (no e) and Anita Crane (as in whooping) and Sharon Hull Dinsmore.

Anita is an Iowa farmer's daughter who manages the business processes and keeps us on track. Anita is the current President of our local Hill Country Quilt Guild.

Helen is from Mississippi and could be the heroine of a Eudora Welty story. She develops the marketing activities for QA. She has served in several offices of our local quilt guild including immediate past-President. Helen's Quilt Gallery is available on our Student Gallery in the Quilting Adventures Interactive web site.

Sharon Dinsmore

Sharon Hull Dinsmore is our webmaster and sends out most of the email communications to our students. She has helped us establish an online community for our students at Quilting Adventures Interactive. The first feature she added was the Quilting Adventures Student Gallery where previous students are invited to share pictures of their quilting projects with the world. Her latest project has been to extend our online community through a Quilting Adventures Student Forum where our Quilting Adventures students can keep in touch with one another. Sharon loves using the computer in fun ways too and teaches quilters to use the computer for design, fabric printing and machine embroidery.

The entire team is actively involved in seeing that your quilting experience in Texas puts a big smile on your face that will last until we see you again.
